Can Tiger Barbs see in the dark?

I have read a lot of questions from people asking if Tiger Barbs are nocturnal or diurnal. As an Aquarist, it is very important to know the type of animal you have as a pet so that you could know if they need light or at least when they need it. The truth is many fish are nocturnal, meaning that they could be able to see in the dark or at night, and so will still be active even if the aquarium light is off. Some fish too are diurnal, meaning that they are only active with light and can’t see in the dark. In this article, you will learn if Tiger Barbs are nocturnal or diurnal and if they need light or not.

Can Tiger Barbs see in the dark? Tiger Barbs are diurnal fish and could only see with light, they don’t see in the dark.

There are many fish that are nocturnal and could still see even if the lights are out and even at night.

Those fish have the ability to see in the dark due to the cone cells in their eyes.

These cells are what made them nocturnal, but Tiger Barbs don’t have them, so they are not nocturnal fish but diurnal fish and can’t see at night or without light.

Do Tiger Barbs Need Light?

Knowing that they are not nocturnal fish, you might be wondering if they need light at all or if they are better off without it.

Do Tiger Barbs need light? Tiger Barbs need light but only dim lights because they despise bright lights.

Although light is not compulsory for them and even if they have it, it should be turned off at the night whenever you want them to sleep because they too need to sleep.

The truth is, all fish will like to be active and play all night, especially diurnal fish like the Barbs for the fact that light is always on, but they need to sleep at night, so their lights should be switched off when it is convenient for you so that they can sleep and rest.

Although light is not very compulsory, it is very advisable to keep a dim aquarium light for them which should be turned off at least about 9-10 pm every day so that they could go to sleep and be healthy.

Can Fish See Their Food In The Dark?

Some fish have night vision which is a result of the cone cells in their eyes and they could see in very low light which we human beings could clarify as dark, they can be able to locate their foods with such low light.

Many fish could be able to locate their foods in the dark, but not all because some are not nocturnal and can’t see at all in the dark.

So, to answer this question, it really depends on the fish because not all of them could see with tiny light or in complete darkness, for instance, fish like Tiger Barbs don’t have night vision and can’t locate their foods in darkness, instead they will go to sleep once it is dark.

Conclusion

Tiger Barbs are not nocturnal and can’t see at night but go to sleep when it is dark.
